Anime & Manga collection + list.

Might as well finally post this. This is the current state of my anime and manga collection. Should be mostly up to date (Will continually update this post when I can). Click on pics for full size. Alphabetical list follows pics.

First, the anime.

Let me explain this simple list. Vol. stands for volumes, the numbers after Vol. are the volumes which I have and the final number is the number of discs. When there is just a number at the end it's the disc number (typically a movie).

Back in the Day - Project A-Ko 02/20/2010.

Sailor-suits, giant robots, space aliens, a superhuman heroine, a heiress and a blonde cutie.

For an anime movie, Project A-Ko comes fully loaded and more well equipped than a luxury sports car. Project A-Ko was masterminded by Katsuhiko Nishijima, the director and main writer for the original story of the anime. It was basically his baby, it was what anime was like at the time and just how ridiculous it all was. It’s a parade of satire that runs the entire gamut of genres from one end to the other making no apologies. That time was 1986, giant robots stood tall announcing their attacks, hair was every color of the rainbow and almost the only thing school girls wore were sailor-suits. While all these things were - and still are - awesome, most of the time they stayed one step away from the absurd, which somehow kept it all believable. Project A-Ko takes that extra step into absurdity and shows anime clichés and themes taken to their extremes. It does this mostly through parodies of several other anime titles that had come before Project A-Ko. From the biggest space operas to the most brutal fists, the big names are poked and prodded.

The story revolves around A-Ko, B-Ko and C-Ko, whose names are a play on both the popular suffix ko of girls names in Japan and extras in anime (aka girl A, girl B and girl C). A-Ko is our red haired superhuman protagonist, C-Ko is her miniscule blonde cutie friend and B-Ko is the purple-haired heiress antagonist who wants C-Ko’s friendship for herself. Morning after morning it’s A-Ko dragging C-Ko by the arm, running and jumping through Graviton City like a Saiyan smashing and bashing everything in her path (including the mysterious figure that‘s been watching them) hoping to not be late to school. It’s quite the feat that little C-Ko doesn’t lose her arm each morning. Yet, each morning she has to deal with B-Ko, along with her robots and mechas, at the front gate of Graviton High. This quickly escalates to the point that B-Ko finally decides to take A-Ko head on with the help of her newly developed power suit that makes her look like a leather clad dominatrix (which is great because it matches her personality). This fight ends up spilling out into the city destroying anything and everything within the vicinity. It goes on all the way to the fight’s culmination aboard a humongous space ship (a satirical reference in and of itself).

So where and how does a space ship fit into it all you ask? Remember that mysterious figure I mentioned earlier? Well, this figure was keeping an eye on A-Ko & C-Ko, reporting back to said ship while it was still in space. Those on the ship have been searching for their princess that went missing 16 years ago and based on the data collected by the mysterious figure, they think they have finally found her. Once they believe without a doubt their princess is on our little dirtball, they descend from space to scoop her up. This causes a bit of a scuffle with the local space army and then the air force once they breach our atmosphere. It makes for some great action sequences filled with the special effects of the time. It is just a little scuffle though, a ship as large as this one doesn’t have much to fear - until it meets A-Ko, B-Ko and C-Ko that is. B-Ko won’t let anything get in her way of beating A-Ko to get C-Ko and A-Ko refuses to be beaten by the likes of B-Ko, so anything that gets in their way is just asking for it. The ship sure does ask for it too, by getting right in the middle of A-Ko and B-Ko during their big fight. Before you know it the ship is going down in flames heading right for the middle of the city, directly towards the structure that caused the destruction of Graviton City 16 years prior.

Project A-Ko delivers a combination of action, comedy and spoofs like no other. The action is top notch stuff; there’s no repeated punches and kicks like you see in DBZ. The big fight between A-Ko and B-Ko alone makes this anime worth watching with A-Ko’s super strength and speed and B-Ko’s dominatrix power suit, whip and wrist mounted missile launcher. A-Ko even uses a tank’s cannon and calls it out like it’s a special attack. One of the neatest, and easily most memorable scenes, in the anime is when A-Ko has to skip from missile to missile on her way to the space ship that’s firing them. The action’s speed is faster than most as well; once it gets going it really gets going. The comedy isn’t left out because of all the action; it’s happening right along with the action, if it isn’t in the action itself. When Project A-Ko goes over the top it goes higher than Mt. Fuji. That goes for both the comedy and action, and once it grab your attention you won’t be able to slip out of it’s clutches. Most of the comedy is physical and sight gags; there isn’t much choice if it wants to keep up with the action. Yet most of those gags are based on one anime or another, so the spoofing is going right along with the action and comedy. The three work very much like a comedy trio, complimenting one another just right and fitting together naturally. Project A-Ko set the bar high for mixing action, comedy and satire together for future anime. For that alone it’s a must watch for anime fans.

The animation looks old because it is old. This is 1986 I’m talking about here. That doesn’t mean it’s not quality stuff, it’s very much so. It’s the age when anime was still completely hand drawn and colored, and Project A-Ko makes for a shining example of such. The colors are bright and crisp, the movement is smooth and fluid and the detail is off the charts. The music was all recorded and made in Los Angeles, CA, so don’t go watching the dub thinking they changed the music and lyrics of the theme song. At the time doing such a thing was a big deal, but they were also pushing to make Project A-Ko a big deal early on in hopes it would be a smash hit. Well, it must have been popular in it’s day since they went on to make 3 OVA sequels and then an alternate reality spin-off. None of them captured the brilliance that was the original, but they were each still worth watching on their own.

Getting your hands on a copy of the US DVD is going to be a little tough. Central Park Media filed chapter 7 bankruptcy last year in April, which is a shame because their Collector’s Series release of Project A-Ko on DVD was one of the best anime DVDs they ever put out. It was an improvement in both video quality and extras over their original DVD release of Project A-Ko. The video was remastered and it probably only looked better when originally viewed in Japanese theaters in 1986. When it comes to DVD extras, the DVD was a superb example of what to include. From behind the scenes at the animation studio to the recording room of the music, you get a very in-depth look at what went into the making of Project A-Ko. One of the best extras wasn’t even on the DVD, but in the case with the DVD - the OST on CD. You really got your money’s worth with CPM’s re-release of their Project A-Ko DVD. I’ve checked around and it’s out there, but at no price I suggest anyone but true lovers of this anime to buy at. What I recommend that anyone wants to own and watch this DVD to do is to keep an eye out for it at anime conventions in the dealer’s room. Many dealers typically have a bargain bin of sorts that will have titles that have gone out of print or are just outright obscure and that’s your goldmine for this DVD. You might have to dig deep and often to find it, but your chances of finding it at a cheap and reasonable price is there. Who knows, you might find other buried treasures of anime while you’re at it.

Back in the Day - Otaku no Video 02/06/2010.

Call yourself a fan of anime and manga do you? Well, this is your ultimate test!

OK, so maybe that’s going too far, but this really is a bit of a test for those who claim to be huge fans of anime and manga. Otaku no Video is one of the few titles that I believe every anime & manga fan should see or at the very least know/heard of in order to really claim to be a fan. That comes off as elitist, I know, but bear with me here. Otaku no Video, while a mock documentary of sorts, is also a small and brief history of anime & manga. It’s a know your roots sort of thing, if you will. Now I don’t, and wouldn’t, expect anyone to be able to catch and know every reference in Otaku no Video; that is unreasonable and unrealistic. Yet, there are a few I would hope would catch the eyes of anime & manga fans of today. Which are those you ask? Well, any true fan doesn’t need to ask, they know. Once again, elitist on my part, but try to understand me here. The references I’m talking about are as basic and common knowledge to me as knowing the capital of the state you live in, or the first President. So for those of you who haven’t seen, or even heard of Otaku no Video, if you can get past the insult on your lack of knowledge I think you’ll find out it’s a fun, or at the very least interesting anime. If nothing else, maybe I’ll educate you a little… hey, get back here! It won’t hurt to learn, honest.

Maybe you’ve heard of a little anime studio called Gainax, which created a somewhat popular anime called Neon Genesis Evangelion in 1995? Well, the same people are responsible for Otaku no Video. Back in 1991 they got the hot idea to make an OVA that sprinkled references to their works and other creators of anime and manga all over the place and, while they were at it, why not some live action interviews with “Otakus”? The main story follows Ken Kubo, just your average college student, a member of the tennis club and boyfriend to Yoshiko. But one day he runs into an old high school friend, and after meeting his friend’s circle of friends his interests begin to change. Next thing you know he himself has become an otaku, and after having his heart broken he decides he’s had enough of the criminalization of otaku and swears to one day become the Otaking! Ah, but that is only half of what Otaku no Video is, it’s other half is the live action interviews with “otakus.” Titled “A Portrait of an Otaku”, the interviews serve as opposition to the anime in that the anime expresses all of the good being an otaku brings while the interviews speaks of all the bad. The interviews are all fake of course, though the people are real. While they may not really be all that bad, they are definitely fans of anime considering it is believed all of them were actually Gainax employees with pseudonyms made from a combination of employee names.

The live action interviews explored each sub-culture of otakudom, from replica gun fanatics, cosplayers, doujinshi artists, dating sim gamers and garage kit builders, it’s all brought up. Each is asked question after question about their hobby and life, the whys and hows of their existence. Some play the part of people who claim to have moved on with their lives. A once cosplayer even denies his involvement in dressing up, yet, he still keeps his Char Aznable helmet in his desk drawer. Most are still heavily active in their perspective field of expertise. After each interview is over a mock poll is brought up, based on the answers of 100 otaku on a given subject. Of course, the interviews are not done in the brightest or well meaning light, but it’s a parody. You can’t let the mocking of your favorite hobby bother you; it’s all one big in-joke for us to all laugh at and enjoy.

I mentioned references at the start of this article, references that are seemingly in every scene and every cut. Seriously, there are so many it’s ridiculous. The US DVD release has more liner notes for a single disc than any other I’ve ever seen. AnimEigo went to great lengths to get the information they got and it’s still not complete. Gainax really squeezed as much as possible into such a short work. Also of note is the fact the Sony is actually spelled as Sony, not Tony, Tomy, Pony or Somy as it is commonly spelled in anime to avoid licensing issues. Maybe it had something to do with a last push of Betamax, since a Betamax player - with a wired remote no less - is used to show the protagonist examples of why anime is so great. I don’t really know why, but it’s nice to see things spelled correctly regardless of the reason. I also mention history at the start of this as well. With Otaku no Video being released in 1991, all of the references are from the 80s and
earlier, some having roots as far back as the 60s. It’s also a clear representation of how far anime & manga has come in acceptance by the masses. It shows a time when just getting your hands on the stuff was quite the task, even in Japan. Most of the video tapes you see in the background of the interviews are clearly recordings off of TV rather than studio releases. Tape trading is also brought up in one of the interviews, something that was one of the key ways to get your hands on anime here in the States. It’s the kind of things that should make those of you that have only experienced anime & manga through the internet realize just how good and easy you’ve had it.

Most of the anime referenced to are pure classics. They are the “Three Musketeers“, “Treasure Island” and “30,000 Leagues Under the Sea” of anime, and as such are highly recommended by me. If you’ve been around the anime scene for some time, or just really enjoy the older stuff like myself, you will get so much fun and pleasure from spotting all the different anime you can as you watch Otaku no Video. There’s plenty to spot as well, a “Where’s Waldo” game filled with everything from your favorite obnoxious aliens to aircraft with legs to a WWII battleship in space to an apartment manager with a dog named after her late husband. All the good stuff is there and easily recognized for those in the know. Then there’s Gainax’s work up to the time of it’s release. From their first animated short, Daicon IV, all the way up to their undersea epic, Nadia: Secret of Blue Water, the Gainax library is easily spotted as the OVA progresses, even in the live action interviews. Not only that but Grand Prix, or GP for short, in the anime is a play on Gainax’s late 80s merchandising venture, General Products. There’s also many titles and series that have been forgotten by time and those even the most diehard and knowledgeable will not pick up on. Gainax dug deep to put in seemingly the most obscure references as possible.

If you don’t own this OVA you should. At the low price of $8 bucks, why not? The US DVD was released in 2002 and is still easily available from AnimEigo’s site as are the liner notes associated with it (which I highly suggest you check out, the amount of info is just nuts). The DVD itself is great, the menus are cheeky with the main menu having Kubo moving his arm pointing at the selections and the playback options menu has Tanaka popping in and out all over the place like a time/space master. The playback options themselves are useful and aplenty. There’s 3 subtitle options and 3 ways to watch the OVA as well, normal, anime only and interviews only. The scene selections are also split between the anime scenes and interview scenes. You can even get your hands on your own Misty May figure, complete with Posi-King and Nega-King, sculpted by the famous Monsieur Bome for around $20-30 bucks at your favorite anime retailer. So lay down some cash on Otaku no Video and learn a thing or two about the history of this hobby and/or bring back some memories of the anime you saw in your youth.

Comic Day 02/03/2010.

With exception of picking up the Deluxe Rocketeer this week I expected a light week. Volume 13 of the Fables TPB and volume 11 of the Walking Dead TPB disagreed with that expectation. So I put a few comics back this week, again, grabbed the ones from last week and grabbed both new volumes putting Walking Dead 11 back for next week while bringing home Fables 13. I also picked up Planet Hulk on BD as I had planned. OK, so I have plenty of pics of the Deluxe Rocketeer that I'll get to later, but first, this week's comics.

Robocop '10 #1
Halo: Blood Line #2 of 5
Siege Embedded #2 of 4
Siege #2 of 4
Invincible Iron Man #23

Ghost Riders Heaven's on Fire #6 of 6
Deadpool Team-Up #896
Cable #23
Wolverine Weapon X #10
Wolverine Savage One-Shot

Fables TPB volume 13
Planet Hulk BD

I thought about putting Fables into the folder for next week, and quickly changed my mind once my need to get my Fables fix kicked in. So far I'm sticking to not buying the singles, because if I do, the collector in me will kick in hard. Next thing you know I would be hunting down all the back issues, I do not need that right now. The thought does intrigue me as I sit here thinking about it, better stop. As for Planet Hulk, been waiting to see it since I saw the commercial for it. If it's even half as good as the comic it's A-OK in my book. I read that it's actually more than just "Hulk Smash", which is a good thing, but I would've been happy if that's all it was.

Alrighty, saved the best for last this Wednesday. Took more than these actually, thought about taking more, but damn, if you REALLY want to see the rest than you can get your hands on your own copy. If you do plan on getting a copy of the Deluxe hardcover, you better act fast, like I've said before, it's hitting collector prices already and I have no doubt just about every single one of these will be spoken for in a couple of months. On to the purdy pictures, don't drool too much.
